The card, in our cars

A Melbourne taxi that accepts MPTP

The Multi Purpose Taxi Program is the Victorian Government subsidy for people with a permanent and severe disability that makes it hard to use public transport. If you hold a card, it takes half off your taxi fare — up to $60 a trip — and Quick Maxi Cab accepts it on every booking we take, in every vehicle we run.

This page is about the part we control: how your card works in our cars, what it covers, and how to book so it actually gets applied. Eligibility, applying for a card and renewing one are administered by Safe Transport Victoria, and their rules change — so for those questions go straight to the source rather than taking our word for it.

Tell us when you book, not at the kerb

The one thing that matters is telling us before the car is sent. Tick “I have an MPTP card” on the booking form, or say so on the phone, and two things happen: we send a vehicle with a working Cabcharge terminal, and we take online payment off the table so you cannot accidentally pay full price. A driver who arrives without a terminal cannot apply your subsidy, and that is a wasted trip for both of us.

You do not need to give us your card number — not on the form, not on the phone. We have no use for it and we do not store it. The card stays with you and is read by the terminal in the vehicle. The driver may ask to see it, because the subsidy belongs to the cardholder and applies to trips the cardholder is actually travelling on.

MPTP questions

Your questions, answered

Call 0413 232 882 — a real person answers, any hour.

How much does the MPTP subsidy take off my fare?
Half the fare, up to a maximum of $60 a trip. On a $70 fare the subsidy is $35 and you pay $35. On a $200 fare the subsidy stops at $60, so you pay $140.
Do I pay online or in the vehicle?
In the vehicle, always. Your MPTP card is swiped on the driver's terminal at the end of the trip, and there is no way to do that online. If you tell us you have a card when you book, we will not offer you online payment — paying up front would mean losing the subsidy on that trip.
Are tolls and airport fees covered?
No. The subsidy applies to the fare. Tolls and airport fees are not subsidised and are paid in full. Your driver's terminal works out the exact split at the end of the trip.
Can I use my card for someone else's trip?
No. The subsidy belongs to the cardholder and only applies to trips the cardholder is travelling on. The driver may ask to see the card.
Do I need to book a wheelchair-accessible vehicle to use MPTP?
No. The subsidy applies in any of our vehicles. Book a wheelchair-accessible vehicle only if you need one — there is no surcharge for it either way.
